Who are the “Seniors” ?

The artistic directorate, in agreement with Seiji Ozawa and the tutors, selects “seniors” from among the former students. This small group of very talented musicians is involved in running the Academy. All of them have worked with Seiji Ozawa. The Academy may decide to give them artistic responsibilities. Julien Szulman is head of the Selection Committee and Suyeon Kim is Concert Master, first violin of the orchestral ensemble.

The Octet

Suyoen KIM, violin, South Korea

In 2006, she won the 1st prize at the International Joseph Joachin Violin Competition in Hanover. She is first concertmaster at Konzerthaus Orchestra in Berlin. Since 2019, she has joined the Artemis  Quartet. She plays the « Lord Newlands » Stradivarius (1702) on loan kindly given by the Nippon Music Foundation. She is one of our « Senior » musicians and is one of our Artistic Advisors and our Concertmaster. She takes part to the Academy since 2004.

Shuichi OKADA, violin, Japan/France

Student at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel as of September 2019 with Augustin Dumay. He studied at the CNSM de Paris with Roland Daugareil. Prizewinner of numerous prizes such as the Concours International de Violon d’Avignon Ginette Neveu, International Fritz Kreisler Competition, or Prince of Hesse prize of the Kronberg Academy. He is invited in numerous festivals (Orangerie de Sceaux, Périgord Noir, Deauville, Evian…). He takes part to the Academy since 2013.

Violaine DESPEYROUX, viola, France

She studied and mastered at the CNSM de Paris with Jean Sulem. In 2014, she was awarded the 2nd prize in Cecil Aronowitz International Viola Competition. She is invited as soloist and chamber musician in all Europe. In 2017, she creates her own string quartet, “Quatuor Daphnis”. She plays a Charles Jacquot (1863). She is one of our « Senior » musicians and takes part to the Academy since 2014.

Jérémy GARBARG, cello, France

Since 2018, Jérémy Garbarg has been an artist in residency at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. As the Classic Revelation of ADAMI 2019, Jérémy Garbarg embodies the new generation of the French cello. He was awarded 3rd Prize and Audience Prize in the international competitions Brahms (Austria) and Viña del Mar (Chile). He won the First Prize with the Duo Consonance at the International Competition of the Societa Umanitaria in Milan.

Julien SZULMAN, violin, France

Laureate of Geneva and Long-Thibaud Competitions. He is concertmaster in Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire (France). He teaches at the Seiji Ozawa Academy in Japan. He is in charge of our Selection Committee and is one of our Artistic Advisors. Julien is one of “senior” musicians. He takes part to the Academy since 2007.

Alexandre PASCAL, violin, France

The young violinist Alexandre Pascal is Classical Revelation Adami 2018 and recently laureate of the Banque Populaire Foundation. Graduate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, he is artist in residence under the direction of Augustin Dumay at La Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Brussels. At the same time as his soloist career, Alexandre Pascal leads an intense activity as chamber musician. He takes part to the Academy since 2016.

Manuel VIOQUE-JUDDE, viola, France

He combines his young career performing as both soloist and chamber musician. His outstanding competition successes include both 2nd Prize and Special sonata Prize at the 14th Primrose Competition and the 2nd prize at the 2016 Tertis Competition. In 2015, his first CD « Viola Reflections » was acclaimed by critics. He is one of our “Senior” musicians and takes part to the Academy since 2011.

Bumjun KIM, cello, France

After studying at the CNSM in Paris with Philippe Muller, Bumjun is currently member of the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Leading an active life as a chamber musician, he has performed at the Les Arcs Music Festival, the Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo, the Deauville Festival, and the Folles Journées de Nantes. He takes part to the Academy since 2013.
